During the last 2 years planning of routes, places to visit and what to bring has been an almost daily returning task or at least a thought.
Travelling on a motorcycle solo normally gives you plenty of space as you normally can restrict yourselves to a limited set of clothing, electronics, gear etc., but when travelling on an adventure you also need to take into account not being near any of your favorit shops or ease of internet ordering – you will almost at every journey miss or loose something that need a replacement. Should I then just bring an extra or how to address this ?
On the shorter trips the last year or so, I’ve optimized and tested the setup – reduced and cut away, replaced items with other smarter ones – both from own experience but also from other world travellers (thanks for sharing and being an inspiration).
As the bike is almost due for shipment, the last few weekends have been spent pre-packing, distribution of what needs to be on the bike for shipment, and what I will bring as carry-on flying to my destination.
I think the puzzle is solved and I will share photos and list of items below that my adventure will bring along.
Packing and limiting weight my ambition was to limit the gear to the two hardcase aluminium panniers, a semi-large (30l) duffel and a backpack. The photos of gear is of what I carry in the individual ”containers” followed by an explanation of the content – and perhaps a short reasoning behind the choise.
The following is part of and fixed to the bike :
- Tarp
- Bike cover (Oxford)
- Trekking pole (for trecking and support for the tarp)
- 5m rope for emergency pull-outs with lockable carabiner
- 1/2” tool for dismounting wheels
- Bag with lightweight camp chair and tent poles (MSR2)
My own gear for safety – so what will I be wearing as the driver:
- Klim Badlands Pro jacket and pants
- Klim down puffy
- Acteryx thin zip jacket
- Shoei helmet, Hornet Adv
- Revit Expedition GTX with Revit knee protectors
- Buffs
For my personal clothing focus has been on quick drying and limitation of smell – so a lot of Merino and bamboo and very little cotton based.
- Walking shoes (Salomon)
- Sandals (either the shown Teva or new Bedrock Cairn 3D Pro II)
- Rain jacket from Acteryx
- 6 mens underwear (bamboo fabric)
- 3 short and 2 long pair of Merino socks
- 5 merino shirts (one with long sleeves)
- Two shirts superdry
- One pair of 3/4 merino underwear
- one pair of long trousers
- One zip-offs (Fjällræven)
- Acteryx windstopper gloves
- Actryx Merino beenie
- Cap
- Belt
- Swim briefs
- Sleeping bag, down in compression bag (not shown)
The left pannier is the biggest one and besides the content above, then I also carry a 1 gallon spare petrol canister and a 2 litre oil canister. Besides the drone and solar panel, all content will only be used when camping or prepping food.
- Tent, 2 person from MSR (poles stored with the chair)
- Toilet paper and small showel
- Headlamp LED with a lantern for light spreading
- 18l ultra compact backpack for shopping (Sea2Summit)
- Pillow
- Towel, microfibre
- Moscito net
- Solar panel
- DJI drone, Mini first edition
- Thermo cup
- Dry line
- Water purifier 1l
- Primus Multifuel burner (and single gas canister and 0.6l fuel canister), also gear for making fire
- Primus pots and spices in plastic containers (inside the pots)
- Plate/cutting board
- Multi use knife
- Titanium Spork
- Scissors, plier and nail scissor
- Dryfood
- Misc plastic bags
The right pannier is smaller due to the exhaust, and to balance the loading all tools and spare parts and spare water is placed in/on this pannier.
- Inflateable sleeping pad
- Safety/reflective west (in case of emergency)
- Puncture toolkit
- Air pump
- Wire and wirelock for securing jacket/pants/boots/helmet if leaving the bike for a walk
- Folding saw (for firewood and removing fallen trees)
- Bugsheet for hostels etc
- Showerbag
- Facemasks, alcoswaps, gloves
- Foodcontainer
- Container with tools, spareparts etc.
And finally the rest and how I document my travel – photo and video, diary, power, toiletries, first aid, bluetooth speaker and headset, paper maps, e-reader and iPad, sunglasses, GPS, two iPhones, spanish dictionary, compass and the Garmin inReach Mini tracker and emergency device, private and vehicle paperwork, funds etc. – all packed and carried on me, the bike and in the Kriega T18 backpack with a 3 ltr hydration reservoir
