Day 48-50 Continuing south, but left or right ?

Going further south the weather provided me with options – wet/cold or re-plan the route. So it was looking into three cold days at El Chalten with the fameus Fitz Roy mountain range and trek, skipping El Chalten and go directly to El Calafate and then into Torres del Paine, or go east and directly to Ushuaia.

Last sections of the Carretera Austral
Dirt and gravel roads – 165km
More dirt and dust

The two days from the marble caves at Puerto Rio Tranquillo via Chile Chico, Perito Moreno and Gdor. Gregores – well first stretch was beautiful and challenging and second just a long Argentinian flats transport – long strait roads with almost nothing …

Passing a small suspension bridge, this was to the right side – this is why I travel
Switching to east side of the Andes, Argentina flats
… and the long never ending strait roads

Leaving the Lago Buenos Aries towards Chile Chico and the Chile/Argentinian border, was last stretch on the Carretera Austral and was 165 km dirt/gravel with switchbacks, steep acents and decents in loose gravel and many kilometers of serious wash-board. The old bike really got a good shaking and dust everywhere – so daily new quirky sounds is heard from my dear companion.

My travel mate from Canada needed fuel, this local on was only option
One final look from Carretera Austral

Last day entering the mountain areas of the Andes in Patagonia was decided at first to drive directly for El Calafate, but leaving early from Gdor. Gregory through a 75km long rough gravel road, allowed me to re-evaluate the weather and hence the possible view of the Fitz Roy peaks. Weather again showed the finest side (luck is with me still) so a short detour of 180km towards El Chalten was definitely worth the time.

First views of the glacier national park between El Chalten and El Calafate
Glacier area at distance – the color of the lake is due to melting water from the ice
Fitz Roy peaks – a must have photo

And then of course the postcard picture now that I due to time and weather was recommended not to take the trek the next two-three days.
