Some 77 km west of El Calafate is the largest glacier area in South America – and it covers ice in both Chile and Argentina. Mostly its only accesible from the Argentinian side and no roads (some tracks for hikers) exists here in the side of Chile.
Glacier names is Perito Moreno, Mayo, Spegazzini, Onelli, Upsala, Viedma and Grande. Main attraction was the Perito Moreno and I followed the hostel host recommendation of getting there early to get the best light and less people. And it did the trick – Glenn and I drove there at 7.30 and were #4 on the parking – so we had it mostly to ourself. And the sun followed us again – but after 30 minutes clouds arrived as was expected from the forecast and then you got another scenery.
The glacier only made sounds to no new icebergs were formed during the hours we were there – but anyway it is an impressive piece of ice. 850 square kilometers and up to 700m thick moving at 2 m a day.
What a great adventure you’re on, Michael. I really wish I could join. Maybe a RTW in 5 years time 🙂
