Day 25 Into Chile again via the Ollegüe border

It wasn’t really my intention to do a blog on this “transport” stage – but what was intended to be an easy and perhaps dull 425km wasn’t without challenges and took considerably longer – 10 hours vs the gps prediction of 6.5 hours. And to be honest it also included waiting for the border staff to return from lunch (2.5 hours).

Good choice of tires for these kind of roads

Of the 425km roughly half was dirt road and in the normal Southamerican quality – so reduced speed and very observant of cracks, holes – and of course foot deep dirt dust. The last put me down twice, but luck showed up with a truck assisting me getting the bike strait again (as I actually was blocking the road). And low speed of course so only my pride was injured.

I have seen better roads

Entering Chile with the target to meet my daugther and celebrating the new year together – well, I had to decent from around 3.900 to 2.600 masl – air is getting thicker and in theory energy should be higher for some days 😉

Some switchbacks hiding the tricky foot deep dirt powder

And that was the difficult part of it – the scenery was again battling each other after every turn. So please enjoy a few of the views that I really enjoyed today.

More volcanos
And another one – actually sending up smile signals
Really white dunes depositing sand on the roads
A number of smaller salt flats emerged often

At the border crossing I met a fellow biker, Peter Murtagh from Ireland. He got stuck on his adventure 2 year ago due to covid, so he parked his bike with a friend and came back to finish what he started – Chile to Alaska. And do note Peter is a brilliant writer (check his blog at Tip2Top.ie) – and also almost 70 years and mastering same bike as mine – great respect and safe travels Peter.
